Amitiza is a medication which is prescribed to individuals who are suffering from bloating, pain, and straining of the stomach. It is also given to people who are suffering from chronic constipation, in which it is difficult or uncommon for them to pass stool for a period lasting 3 months or more in the absence of affects from other medications or diseases. Amitiza can help to produce softer and more common bowel movements in these individuals. In addition to this, it may be prescribed to women who are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome that is accompanied by constipation. It is typically on prescribed to those who are over the age of eighteen. The medication is considered to be a laxative. It works by increasing the amount of fluid that is passed into the bowel area, and allowing stool to pass through the body more easily.
Amitiza comes in the form of a capsule which is taken orally. In most cases it is taken with food twice a day, usually at morning and night. It should be taken at about the same time every day. Make sure that you completely understand the directions before you take it or any other medication. If there is anything that you are unsure about, make sure that you address it either with your doctor or with a pharmacist. Do not take a different dose than recommended by your doctor, and do not take it more or less frequently than your doctor has asked you to.
It is important to understand that while Amitiza is effective at treating the symptoms of the disorders listed above, it is not a cure for any disease. You must keep taking the medication even if you feel like you are getting better. Do not stop taking the medication without fist speaking with your doctor. Your doctor will keep track of your condition and let you know if and when you should stop taking Amitiza.
If you forget to take your pill, simply skip the dose that you forgot to take and get back onto your regular schedule. Do not attempt to "catch up" by taking a double dose. Never take a double dose, even if you missed the previous one.
When storing the medication, make sure that it is kept in the same container that it came in, closed, and away from children. It should be held at room temperature and far away from any excesses of heat or moisture.
